I love Maddy Prior so much. <3 <3 <3
So, for the second time in two days, I am embarrassed to find that I didn’t do my homework on a ballad — or rather, I did some homework, but not all of it. I went to some authoritative books on broadside ballads to find the “real” tunes for Tom o’Bedlam and Mad Maudlin’s Search, but I failed to notice just how immensely popular the latter has become among modern performers, both traditionalist and folk-rock, under the name Bedlam Boys. And it seems no one uses the original tune given in Pills to Purge Melancholy, but they aren’t just making shit up; they all use the same alternate tune! Which is a great tune!
